Conductorcise is a novel exercise program developed by David Dworkin, a classically trained musician and conductor. He calls Conductorcise "A SOUND Workout for Mind, Body and Soul". Maestro Dworkin combines his knowledge of classical music with an enthusiastic teaching style. He encourages his students to join him in moving and stretching as you would if you were conducting an orchestra.
Maestro Dworkin leads groups of all ages but especially older adults and children. He uses a variety of music such as marches by John Philip Sousa and Johann Strauss; concert, ballet, and operatic classics of Mozart, Tchaikovsky, Brahms and Dvorak; and symphonic pieces by Offenbach, Rimsky-Korsakov and Copland. The Times Picayune newspaper in New Orleans described his program as "A symphony performance, a music history lesson, and aerobics workout, all rolled into one." You can get a peek at his conducting style and hear how he developed Conductorcise on this Youtube video.
I have watched Maestro Dworkin conduct and lead classes on a DVD that I purchased from Conductorcise several years ago and I have spoken to him to learn about his certification program for new instructors.
As far as I know, you can no longer buy the DVDs; you can only get them if you enroll in the Conductorcise certification program. But Maestro Dworkin does teach classes across the US and around the world, so you may have a chance to see him in person. And he continues to train instructors who provide Conductorcise programs in retirement communities and other settings in several states.
Information about his travels are available on his website and his Facebook page. The Conductorcise website and their Facebook page also provide information on the certification program and provides a list of people around the world who have been certified to lead local programs. If you are lucky you will find a program near your home.
