Why over 60?
Welcome to GransStayStrong, a website with ideas to help older adults 
​stay strong, active, and independent.
  Who are "Grans"?
     "Grans" are Grandparents and Grand aunts and uncles, and others who fall into the
      same age group
.  And, although some people become grandparents in their 50's, this 
​      site will focus on people in their 60's to 90's.

​Most of the people who look at exercise websites for "older adults" are between 60 and 90 years of age. That's a big age range. Our needs, interests, and abilities change significantly as we go from 60 to 90 but we need to stay strong at every age. 

Why do we need to stay strong?

For the younger people in the group, staying strong might mean staying fit for work or keeping up with children or grandchildren.
   

For retirees, s
taying strong might mean taking up a new hobby or being able to travel. 

For the oldest "old", staying strong might mean being able to use a walker instead of a wheelchair and being able to stay in your own home instead of moving to a residential care facility.

Staying strong requires regular  exercise. But as we age, we often develop problems that make it harder to exercise.  We gain weight, develop arthritis, or have vision or balance problems.  Some of us have disorders that require special medication or special monitoring or have had injuries that make activities more difficult.  

We may need to find new activities or make modify our current exercises. 


This website will not teach you how to run a marathon or get ready for the Senior Games. It will present ideas about people, places, and things that can help you stay strong for everyday activities.  It may help you find ways to keep doing some of the things you love, or even find new activities that you never considered before.  Some of these ideas are "adaptive exercise".  They may be exercises modified to help people with physical limitations continue to be active or equipment that makes activities easier. 

We hope this site will be useful to older adults.  This site may also be useful for sons and daughters looking for resources for their parents or for older friends or relatives.  It might help fitness trainers looking for new ideas to help their older clients.
